It doesn’t make any difference whether you are a large company doing business on the internet with shopping cars and thousands of products or just someone who wants to share their hobby with the world.
There are so many different web hosting companies out there that it can be a confusing process just trying to choose one, much less trying to find one that is affordable. Here are a few things to consider that will take some of the headache out of the process for you.
The first thing that must be determined is what type of website or websites you are going to feature. This will greatly influence your ultimate choice in web hosts. If you are only going to have a website of less than one hundred pages and you aren’t going to be hosting videos and streaming audio you will find that a standard entry level web hosting package will probably do the trick for you. You can find these packages for under $10 per month and there are numerous companies that offer this type of service.
Another option to consider as a small company is shared web hosting. Again you can get this type of service for well under $10 per month and you can always upgrade as you grow. The thing to remember is not to sacrifice quality just to save a few bucks a year. There isn’t a lot of difference in price to go with a web host that offers really good features as opposed to one that offers shoddy service.
One of the other issues that can be confusing for people is that of bandwidth. In a nutshell, this is the amount of data that your site is allowed to transfer through the web host’s servers. If you are operating a business website do not skimp on this. Many web hosts have automatic shut downs enabled if your site goes over its monthly bandwidth allotment. It isn’t as crucial if you are just running a personal or hobby type of site but if you are running a business a shut down website is the equivalent of locked doors at a brick and mortar business.
Although it is nearly impossible to determine a bandwidth amount in the beginning you can get a good idea to start with by figuring the number of web pages you have, their size in megabytes, and the number of hits you expect daily and multiply it to get an idea for the bandwidth usage you may have over a month. If you choose the right web hosting company they will let you upgrade if it looks like you are going to go over. Another key is to be sure that the company offers web stats that will allow you to check the traffic and hits that are coming to your site.

What is a Web Host?
Posted: 04-08-2006 | Views: 24 | Word Count: 515 | Excellent Good OK Not Great Weak

By: Larry Washington

What exactly is a web host? This question is typical of someone who is new to or just getting into the process of building a website. Put simply, a web host is basically a neighborhood of web sites stored on a server. Period.

To elaborate a little more, let me go into more detail. These servers are actually owned by the web hosting companies we seek out for housing our websites. Each website has it's own address (referred to as URL) to help individuals like you and I arrive at the destination to find what we need.

Whether it be products, information, music, etc there is no limit to what can be found online but that's an entirely different story.

When you host a website with someone it can be stored anywhere. For instance, a website that was built by someone in Europe could have the site hosted on a server in Miami, FL. That's what's so amazing about the internet because it offers so much flexibility as to where you want to your website stored. You are not limited to your home country.

You can look at website hosting the same way as paying rent for an apartment. Essentially, you are renting out space to keep your website in order for people to view it. Just like apartments there are rules to abide by. This could be restrictions as to the types of programs you run on the servers. Certain programs use up a considerable amount of resources causing the servers to get bogged down.

If the host provider company traces it back to you, they'll ask you to remove it and never use it again. What happens is the resources being used up can cause problems with other websites stored on the servers. This can lead to sites being unavailable or people getting that "website is busy" message when trying to visit the url.

If this happens too much people may just decide to move their website to another host provider. Web hosts want to avoid this inconvenience as much as possible. With today's technology many of the servers are very stable and usually don't run into this problem like they did years ago.

Another thing to be aware of is the type of website you plan to publish. By this I'm referring to the type of material you'll be displaying on it. If your site happens to include things of a pornographic nature, you may just find your website evicted from their servers. Please be sure to read the host provider's terms of use very carefully before uploading web sites of that nature to the servers.

If you are new to website hosting, it can be overwhelming as to whether or not you are getting the right plan or package deal. Don't worry because a lot of the features you need come with the cheapest plan offered. The other features are more suited to individuals that are more advanced when it comes to website building.

As your experience grows and you become more proficient at building and running a website, you can always upgrade to another package when needed.

Cheap Web hosting

Finding cheap website hosting has never been easier. Technology and bandwidth are getting less expensive every day and the cost of website hosting is going down just the same.
Many people and small business owners have hesitated going online with a website because they don't think they can afford to do it. They have taken a look at the large amount of money big companies are spending on their websites and hosting. But the reality is, most companies can use a cheap website hosting provider and stay well within a budget.
One place to look to in regards to cheap website hosting is free hosting services. You can not get any cheaper than that. After the dot com boom free website hosting didn't disappear they just became a bit harder to find. There are only a few big names left in the free hosting circle such as GeoCities and Tripod.
Free hosting is good if you are just starting out and money is an issue. The problem is it has a lot of limitations. Most come with ads all over your site and you do not share in the revenue they may produce. If your site was to become popular and have a lot of visitors they could suspend your site because of to much usage or force you to sign up for a paid account. This may be the ultimate cheap website hosting but may not be what is best for you.
If you need cheap website hosting but are not sure if you want to the commitment of a yearly plan, but you don't want the limitations that a free hosting company will impose on you, you have a few options available for your consideration.
Cheap website hosting is available on a pay as you go plan. This is not real popular as of yet but is becoming more available all the time. You do not pay a monthly fee. What you do is, put money on your account then each time someone accesses your site a small amount is taken off the books. This way you are only paying for what you are using.
Another cheap website hosting plan is finding a web host that does not make you commit to a long term agreement. Many cheap web host providers will offer a monthly plan that is reasonable and affordable. You have all the benefits, but do not have the long term commitment should you change your mind.
You can find cheap website hosting with great customer service for as little as five dollars or less a month. You will have all the disk space and bandwidth needed to make your online presence a success. To find these do your homework. Research and also find others who have used or are using a particular company you are interested in.
A word of caution in regards to some cheap website hosting companies. Do not let them over sell you. You do not need a huge amount of disk space or bandwidths so don't pay for a excessive amount. Try and find a cheap web host that will allow you to add to your disk space or bandwidth as you go.
